In a Circle Records is proud to present "The Butterfly", a new collaborative album from Martin Hayes and Brooklyn Rider.

Recorded in 2016, the album celebrates a decade-long musical friendship between celebrated Irish fiddler and New York’s omnivorous string quartet.

This project, which dates back to 2009, was Martin Hayes’ first major collaboration outside the Irish tradition. In addition to featuring the premiere recording of “Maghera Mountain”, (written by Hayes as a teenager), "The Butterfly" sought to define a common ground through the inclusion of several of the most widely known tunes within the repertoire, such as "O'Neill's March" and "The Butterfly".

DIGITAL ALBUMS

Dominant Curve (2010)

Brooklyn Rider

This NYC string quartet celebrates Claude Debussy with a fresh and vivid interpretation of his String Quartet in G Minor. Born out of a desire to use the rich medium of the string quartet as a vehicle for communication across a large cross section of history and geography, Brooklyn Rider is equally devoted to the interpretation of existing quartet literature and to the creation of new works. Following their critically acclaimed debut album, Passport (2008), Dominant Curve, a new self-produced recording from the group, marks their second release on In a Circle Records. Dominant Curve's eclectic sound world is deeply reflective of the signature approach of Brooklyn Rider. Like much of the quartet's output, the album is global in its scale - representing traditions from France, United States, Uzbekistan, Japan, and beyond. It also represents Brooklyn Rider's newest iteration of their porous approach to the string quartet tradition, creating a transformational journey between familiar and unfamiliar, acoustic and electro-acoustic, past and present.

Seven Steps (2011)

Brooklyn Rider

Seven Steps features Beethoven's opus 131 and the first ever original work created by a classical string quartet. Brooklyn Rider continues to expand their transformational approach to string quartet tradition with Seven Steps. The new album features Beethoven's opus 131, the premiere recording of a work by Slow Six front man, Christopher Tignor and Brooklyn Rider's first-ever collaborative composition, Seven Steps. The intersection between the improvisatory spirit of Seven Steps, the luminescent sound world of Together Into This Unknowable Night, and the transcendent world of late Beethoven aptly represents the multifaceted passions of Brooklyn Rider.
